Newborn Checkups

For expecting parents or parents of newborns, health of the child is their No.1 priority. Although most newborns may look healthy, they may have serious problems when diseases or disorders are not found and treated at initial stages. We provide guidelines to basic newborn checkups for your baby’s well-being.

Special Sonogram for Newborns
: heart sonogram / head sonogram

Heart sonograms and head sonograms are to detect potential congenital cerebropathia or cardiac disorders which haven’t been found in prenatal checkups.

Cardiac disorders which require surgical treatments may not be found during prenatal checkups, and even after birth, noise in the heart may not be heard well through the stethoscope. In this case, the baby’s condition may worsen; therefore it is important to check it out in advance.

Congenital metabolism test

Congenital metabolic disorder refers to diseases which cause intelligence disorders, cerebral disorders, liver and kidney disorders due o metabolic disorders of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. It’s hard to find any symptoms on newborn in very early stages, even he/she has congenital metabolism disorders.
When the symptoms start to happen, it is difficult to recover from it to normal status even with treatment, and it may cause mental retardation and developmental disorders.
Late treatment makes normal development and growth difficult; it is very important to find it and start appropriate treatment in a very early stage between 2 to 7 days of birth.

Newborn Hearing Test

Hearing disorder is a common disease, and 3 out of every 1000 newborn babies have it. It can cause serious retardation to the development of the baby’s hearing, intelligence, and language as well. Generally the cochlea, the organ to deliber sound is formed inside ears of the fetus between 24 to 26 weeks of pregnancy. Babies are born with developed senses of hearing. However, hearing disorder occur due to various factors like genetic ones or fetal infection. In case of congenital hearing disorder, it is possible for newborn to develop their language normally if adequate treatments are conducted in 6 months after birth. Initial checkup should take place within 24 to 72 hours of birth, and it takes only 2 minutes when the baby is asleep.

Newborn Assessment of Visual Acuity

Newborn’s visual acuity is not complete, and it continually develops. It is very important to find newborn abnormalities in early stage and start adequate treatments to minimize disabilities by checking cataract, strabismus, glaucoma, and retinal abnormalities.

G-Scanning

The number of newborns with chromosome anomalies is increasing due to environmental factors and pregnancy of advanced materal age. G-scanning scans the general integrity of all chromosomes, and can provide accurate information on various genetic disorders like chromosomal anomaly which causes learning disorders, insufficient development, autism and epilepsy.
